As the world faces the daunting global climate crisis, the film and inquiry based hands-on STEM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) aim to foster creative problem solving and design-thinking around sustainability. Our goal is to spark interest and deepen understanding of renewable energy and climate solutions, increasing environmental literacy and STEM learning for all students, especially underserved schools and low income communities. Ultimately, our mission is to turn inspiration into action – empowering students to harness their imaginations to innovate solutions for a more sustainable world and become the environmental leaders of tomorrow.
The non-profit initiative will distribute a 57 min. educational version of Point of No Return for K-12 students, along with inquiry-based STEM enrichment curriculum, hands-on classroom activities and builder kits focused on renewable energy, sustainability and climate solutions, for upper elementary (3rd-5th), middle school, and high school classrooms across the US and ultimately, internationally. As students tackle design challenges such as engineering a solar powered machine, building a battery, or designing the energy plan for a sustainable city, they will experiment and tinker, try and fail, and imagine creative sustainable solutions. The curriculum, created by our partner Solar One, is tied to Next Generation Science Standards and based in the four C’s of 21st century learning- Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication – key elements to the success of Solar Impulse’s pioneering zero-fuel flight around the world.
Thanks to grant funding from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and donations we are able to offer this program at no cost to schools that serve students who traditionally have not had access to this type of educational enrichment. If your school is a Title 1 school and or serves 40% or more low income students (who qualify for free/reduced-price lunch) then you may be eligible to receive the program at no cost.
The Point of No Return Educational Program includes the 57 minute version of the documentary film, Point of No Return, the curriculum and activities, and a classroom Builder Kit for up to 30 students working in 6 small groups together. The Builder Kit provided will include the majority of classroom materials a teacher will need, however teachers will need to provide some common classroom or household supplies such as tinfoil, cardboard, or AA batteries.
Please note: Distance Learning Kits are available for students to order directly for home use, including the same materials but designed for 1-3 students. The film and curriculum can also be ordered without the builder’s kit, as there are many valuable study guides and activities that do not require building materials.
